The garden we planted this spring is doing great, and the kids are just loving it! We picked a bunch of peas, green beans, and burgundy beans last week to have with our meals. Boy, they were good! Friday evening we had some friends and their kids come over to watch fireworks and it only took a few minutes for all of the kids to gather around the peas and start picking any that they could find. The younger ones would then run to their parents to get help opening the pods, whereby the parents would snatch a few peas themselves as payment. I never knew that gardening with kids could be so much fun.
The other morning we discovered that the kids were incorporating the snitching of peas into their dramatic play. . . Nicole (playing the princess) was being escorted around the yard in her royal wagon by her trusted knight, when the evil villain tempted her with fresh peas that had a spell on them, but alas when she ate the magical peas it put her into a deep sleep. How to wake the princess, a kiss? NO, they tickled her and she woke up again.
The kids have also been enjoying the black raspberry bush that is producing well this year, and we only planted it slightly over a year ago. They don't even mind the thorns as the berries are so good.
