After years of begging I finally relented to having a garden. My husband, David, has been wanting one for years, and he got the kids in on the asking for it this year. We discussed locations in the yard and finally settled on a spot to put this 12x12 garden, went and bought the rabbit fencing we needed, etc.
Wed. I was given instructions from my dear husband on removing the sod so that I could work on it while he was at work. He said to use our trencher to cut the sod into strips and then simply roll up the sod and remove it. I vaguely remembered watching it done on some TV program and thought it sounded easy. So I proceeded to cut out the desired area using the trencher. But that was where the trouble then started. (Now don't laugh at me) But at this point I was surprised to discover that the sod is still attached to the ground and has to be basically dug up--I'm not sure where the rolling part comes in as we never were able to get that to happen. So the three kids and I spent the whole afternoon laboring to remove sod, and only managed to remove about a 1/3 of the desired area.
The next morning David was off of work so thankfully he was there to help out. He laughed at my strip cuts (evidently they aren't supposed to be 2 feet wide but smaller strips). So he fixed my mistakes and using a bit more muscle power we were able to remove the rest of the sod and get the fencing installed, etc.
Next came the planning stage--what to grow? The kids had all sorts of ideas and started to make a list. Isaac was at first very adamant that we should grow squash. But then I asked him if he would eat it once we grew it and he responded, "NO, I don't like to eat squash." So after further discussion we decided it would be wise to only grow items that we were willing to eat.
This morning we took the kids to the nursery to get seeds and some plants for the garden. I think we should have had a more strict list when we went in as we bought way too many types of veggies/fruit, but we have now planted a full garden--well a full garden if everything actually grows. We planted : corn, pumpkins, watermelon, cantaloupe, burgundy beans, green beans, peas, carrots, rosemary, parsley, mint, basil, tomatoes, and strawberries. Skye had fun creating labels for each of the plants being grown.
Of course the kids are already asking when everything will be ready to eat. . . it should be a fun summer.

Fun! That makes me want to grow some fruit and veggies now! (Though I think I'll leave the hard stuff for someone else to do, you are way more ambitious then I am!) Love Isaac's comment about the squash, btw.
